Australian trio sets highest basketball shot world record

An Australian YouTube stunt trio set a new world record for the highest-ever basketball shot after bagging an attempt from 180 meters above the hoop.

Derek Herron made the shot on just his third attempt, but only realised he’d been successful after seeing the reaction of his companion.

“It was a surreal moment nailing it on the third shot,” Herron told Guinness World Records.

“I watched the ball head towards the rim and saw the net move but still had my doubts that it went in until I saw Scott [Gaunson] going crazy.”

Herron, Gaunson and Brett Stanford compose a trio called ‘How Ridiculous’, which performs tricks and shares them on social media. They took the shot from the top of the Mauvoisin Dam in Valais, Switzerland.

How Ridiculous previously set the record in 2011 for the highest shot from 66.88m from a tower above the Western Australia Cricket Association Ground in Perth, Australia.

They bettered that mark twice, before American trick-shot quintet Dude Perfect took over in May with a shot from 162m from the top of Oklahoma City’s Cotter Ranch Tower.

However, the Australian trio refused to rest on their laurels and have now regained their record in a stunning fashion.

“It is more than the shot, isn’t it? It is very much where we’re going – the journey to get out there,” they say in the YouTube video showcasing their achievement.

“You don’t jump on a plane every day of the week and travel 20 hours to the other side of the globe to make a basketball shot that’s probably one of the biggest ones we might ever do or potentially even mankind.”
